Domain Name Ownership and Regulation
Protecting your online identity is obviously very important. Domain names can sell for thousands of dollars / pounds and can even make or break a brand. So, who is responsible for domain name ownership and regulation?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for the domain name system. ICANN coordinates the assignment of Internet domain names, IP address numbers and protocol parameters.
ICANN (and Nominet for .uk domains) approve accredited registrars to manage and sell domain names on their behalf, for example Internet Service Providers and web design companies.
What about domain names and Trademarks?
Domain names and trademarks have completely separate registration systems. However, domain names can acquire trademark significance if they are used to identify the source of products or services. Owning a trademark does not give you a right to a domain name.
